The built environment is the physical expression of economic and social development of society. Creating sustainable built environments that satisfy environmental, social and economic objectives are widely accepted in principle, and a degree of understanding about sustainability has developed in many countries. Yet achieving sustainability is a complex task and the challenge has moved from sustainability education ie the need to inform about the need, to education for sustainability ie how to implement sustainable development programs. There is a growing body of principles and techniques to do this in relation to the built environment, and still a lot to learn. Education for sustainability is about empowering professionals to take on the challenge, it is transformative rather than just transmissive, it is holistic and seeks critical thinking.The task begins with ways of thinking as well as considering the differing value systems and cultures that influence the ways communities shape their built environments.
Applicants require a recognised undergraduate degree (or equivalent qualification) in taxation, law or commerce, with a credit average, as determined by the Australian School of Business.
For those applicants who did not complete a university level course of study in taxation as part of their undergraduate degree, they may be required to complete a qualifying course prior to admission to postgraduate studies(TABL5901).
The Master of Taxation is a specialist program designed to meet the growing need of Taxation professionals and practitioners to deal with complex taxation issues involved in business decisions and business transactions. Taught by leading tax academics, the program provides exposure to the more complex aspects of the discipline and a critical understanding of the Australian taxation system. The program also emphasises developing skills in research, analysis and sustained self-directed writing, including relevant skills in collecting and organising material.

(1) A candidate for the Graduate Certificate of Teaching shall:??
(a) have been awarded an appropriate degree of Bachelor from the University of New South Wales or a qualification considered equivalent from another university or tertiary institution at a level acceptable to the Standing Committee of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (hereinafter referred to as the Committee);
and (b)(i) have been awarded a Diploma in Education from the University of New South Wales or a qualification considered equivalent from another university or tertiary institution at a level acceptable to the Committee, ?
or?(ii) have had at least three years of practical experience in an area relevant to the study of education of a kind acceptable to the Committee. ??
(c) have already completed or be in the process of completing approved background studies in the relevant teaching area, normally a minor or four semester length units.
(2) In exceptional cases an applicant who submits evidence of such other academic and professional qualifications as may be approved by the Committee may be permitted to enrol for the degree. ??
(3) If the Committee is not satisfied with the qualifications submitted by an applicant the Committee may require the applicant to undergo such assessment or carry out such work as the Committee may prescribe, before permitting enrolment.
The Graduate Certificate of Teaching is designed to enable qualified practising secondary teachers to update and/or add an additional teaching area to their formal preservice teacher qualifications.
The teaching areas include: Aboriginal Studies; Business Studies; Dance, Drama; Economics; English; English as a Second Language; Geography; History; Languages (Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Indonesian, Korean and Spanish); Legal Studies; Mathematics; Music; and Society and Culture.

A Masters by Research program requires students to undertake an original investigation. In comparison to a doctorate however, this investigation is generally more limited in scope and degree of originality. The work is closely supervised in the early problem formulation stages and whenever a new technique is being used. The program requires the submission of a thesis embodying the results of an original investigation or design.
As a general guide, the minimum requirement for a Postgraduate Research Degree (PhD, Master by Research or MPhil) within UNSW Built Environment is an appropriate undergraduate degree, usually at honours level, in a field represented within UNSW Built Environment, or another relevant discipline.
Candidates may be admitted to the PhD program after one year’s full-time enrolment in a Masters by Research program, with the approval of the Faculty Research Committee. Participants in the program are required to have completed a three year undergraduate degree at a recognized university, and all candidates are required to be actively engaged in teaching in higher education throughout the duration of the program.
The focus of the Graduate Certificate in University Learning and Teaching (GCULT) is on the development of teaching capability in higher education (HE). The program is designed to assist both new and experienced University teachers to develop a scholarly approach to teaching. This is achieved by a balance of theory with practice: viewing learning and teaching from a range of perspectives including participants own experiences, the experiences of students and of colleagues, and the educational literature. The process of reflection on these perspectives provides a foundation for individual professional teaching development and for further exploration in higher education.
Admission to 8131 Urban Development and Design Program (72 UOC) is for students who have a recognised four year Bachelor degree or equivalent in an appropriate cognate discipline or the completion of the new proposed 7131 Graduate Certificate from non-relevant disciplines. Admission is also open to graduates of a recognised three year undergraduate degree in Architecture studies. All applicants must have achieved a minimum of a credit average (equivalent to a WAM of 65 or above) in their Bachelor degree.
Relevant disciplines would typically include design and non-design based disciplines in the built environment, design and engineering: Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Interior Architecture, Design, Planning, Property Development, Construction, Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering and Transport Engineering.
Master of Urban Development & Design (MUDD) is a multidisciplinary degree which links the study of urban design with the processes of urban development. Through the investigation of urban growth and change in a studio-based setting, you will understand the role of urban design in relation to the forces which shape the city.

An undergraduate degree with at least a credit average in a relevant discipline is also required. A relevant degree would encompass studies in a built environment discipline as well as studies in social science, social policy, business and law. Applicants will be required to undertake an interview process as part of their application for entry into the program.
Urban Policy and Strategy is a unique degree offered by the Faculty of Built Environment for professionals wishing to develop advanced skills in urban management. The program focuses on developing leaders in the field of urban policy. Work in this field is challenging and complex and requires a capacity not only to understand the range of issues confronting urban managers but also to understand how to use and interpret data, to prepare evidence based policy, and to understand core development finance feasibilities.
