The CCDC trained a number of PhD students under normal academic grants during its period as part of the Department of Chemistry (1965-1989). In 1991, the independent CCDC set aside funds for the support of postgraduate students at the University of Cambridge, at other Universities in the UK and abroad, and at the CCDC itself. Since 1991, around 50 students have received full or partial CCDC funding.In all cases, the research projects have had relevance to the scientific interests and objectives of the CCDC, and in all cases a CCDC staff member has been the official supervisor or a designated co-supervisor. Students have been supported at 16 different institutions (including the CCDC itself and the University of Cambridge).

The PhD is a three-year research degree, examined by a dissertation of up to 80,000 words. Candidates work independently and closely with their supervisor, a senior member of the Classics Faculty and also have a secondary supervisor. Classes are provided in specialist research skills (eg epigraphy, palaeography, numismatics, and German).

A research-based course. Students receive training inscientific laboratory skills and methods appropriate to the PhD project.Students undertake a specific research project of 3-4 years duration, and submit a dissertation which is examined for the PhD. In principle, the research project can be in any area of interest to Principal Investigators based at the Metabolic Research Laboratories, at the Wellcome Trust-MRC Institute of Metabolic Science (http://www.mrl.ims.cam.ac.uk/staff/).Between them, groups encompass skills in genetics, cell biology, cell signalling, neuroendocrinology, bioenergetics, human and animal physiology, as well as experimental medicine and clinical trials.

The PhDis the primary research degree that can be taken in the Computer Laboratory. The Cambridge PhD is a three-year programme of individual research on a topic agreed by the student and the Laboratory, under the guidance of a staff member as the student's supervisor.All research students are admitted to read for the PhD Degree on a probationary basis and most will be registered for the Certificate of Postgraduate Study (CPGS) in the first instance. During this year students may do some additional coursework and will write a research report that is likely to form the foundation of the eventual PhD dissertation.

The Institute has a well-established programme for those wishing to study for a doctorate. Each year, a small number of students are admitted to the doctoral programme. Candidates for the Ph.D. must normally pursue supervised research in residence in Cambridge for at least nine consecutive terms (three years) for full-time students, or 15 terms (five years) for part-time students. Completion of the doctoral programme involves, among other requirements, the writing of a dissertation of up to 80,000 words exclusive of footnotes, appendices and bibliography but subject to an overall word limit of 100,000 words exclusive of bibliography.The Institute encourages applications from suitably qualified applicants of all nationalities.
