Our students are greatly sought after. Over the last five years 25% of our 80 PhD graduates have gone into the oil and other industries; 25% to research fellowships; 29% to work on research grants and contracts; 10% directly into university teaching posts and 11% into non-scientific posts including the civil service. Modern genetics has today evolved beyond its traditional boundaries to become a fundamental part of biology and medicine. The Department reflects this pervasiveness with research interests encompassing several high impact themes, including functional genomics and systems biology, developmental genetics, epigenetic Inheritance, evolution and population genetics, microbial genetics, and cell biology. The Department of Genetics hosts between 50 and 65 postgraduate students across 25 research groups, researching a wide range of biological problems, from population genetics and ecology, to the detailed analysis of genome sequence.

The PhD in History is an advanced research degree, awarded on the basis of a thesis and an oral viva voce examination. The primary purpose of the PhD is the preparation and presentation of a substantial piece of independent and original academic research, completed in three-years if studying full-time and five-years if studying part-time.Every PhD student in the Faculty of History is supported by a supervisor or supervisors. Supervisors are experts in their field of study and support students throughout the PhD.

Before a student can be admitted, a member of the Department's teaching staff, approved by the Degree Committee, needs to agree to supervise the PhD. The supervisor is responsible for guiding the student's studies throughout his or her years at Cambridge, including by giving regular and detailed feedback on written work. In addition, each student is assigned an advisor by the end of the first term who then continues as part of the supervisory team throughout the PhD.Students are encouraged to attend the research seminars, workshops and reading groups that make the Department a hive of intellectual activity. The Department also offers graduate training workshops, which focus on key research, presentation, publication and employment skills.

The Department of Theoretical and Applied linguistics is unique in the UK in that it integrates theoretical and applied linguistics in a single Department. The Department provides great variety and flexibility in course contents as well as subject-specific training and diversity of intellectual interactions. This full time course is designed to provide further training in research in Materials Science after a minimum of at least 3 years' university-level education to UK Bachelor's level, or overseas equivalent.MPhil students are encouraged to participate in many of the training opportunities and other activities available to students in the University, and become fully integrated members of the Department's Research School.Students carry out a one-year research programme under the supervision of a member of the academic staff of the Department of Materials Science.
