Do you want to be part of the major advances that are being made in medicine, nanotechnology, new materials and the environment? In this course, you will develop an understanding of the mechanisms, reactions and processes that occur at the molecular level. You will study the elements that make up all matter, and how they interact with each other to construct living organisms, transmit power from the sun, produce minerals and fuel environmental processes. To complement your lectures from renowned experts in their various fields, you will have the chance to discuss, apply and expand on the theory of your unit in weekly practical laboratory classes. The Bayliss Building in the School of Chemistry and Biochemistry is equipped with excellent laboratory facilities for undergraduate teaching. Its teaching and research laboratories are supported by state-of-the-art instrumentation for the important methods of structure determination (nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), X-ray crystallography and mass spectrometry), as well as a wide variety of complementary techniques.

Human activity and population growth are increasing the pressure on natural ecosystems and many biologists believe we are currently experiencing the sixth global mass extinction. Conservation biologists integrate knowledge of biological sciences, natural resource management, social sciences and economics to develop strategies to prevent species or population extinctions.

Geologists study how the Earth formed and evolved during the past 4.4 billion years, including the origin of continents, oceans, atmosphere and life; and how natural processes deep within Earth's interior shape the surface on which we live. As a Geology student, you will learn how to interpret geological processes and Earth history, and about the formation of important resources and how climate and environments change through time. Most of Australia's mineral and petroleum resources are in Western Australia, so UWA is well placed for students to gain geological skills. Teaching methods consist of lectures from leading experts and industry professionals, practical, computer and laboratory classes and tutorials. This course includes extensive field work, with several field trips of one to seven days
