The Master of Rural and Remote Medicine is a broad-based degree for those wishing to pursue a career in teaching or research focused on rural and remote medicine.

This course incorporates a mixture of coursework units, core and advanced specialty skills training and a significant body of research which culminates in a thesis being produced.

This course provides a foundation in the research discipline of epidemiology, biostatistics, health economics and health promotion, as well as the broader social context in which public health programs are planned, delivered and evaluated. It also provides an opportunity for the student to undertake a period of supervised practice within a public health context.

To be considered for admission to this course an applicant must have— (a) a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, or an equivalent qualification, as recognised by UWA; and (b) at least two years of postgraduate laboratory experience in a biomedical discipline.

This course provides an in-depth knowledge of the patho-physiological basis of disease. While developing proficiency in advanced laboratory techniques and expertise in the logical use and interpretation of laboratory tests, students also acquire knowledge of the clinical utility and scientific basis of laboratory tests and the statistical tools for assessment of their value and reliability.

To be provisionally accepted into the course for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, an applicant must— (a) have a bachelor's degree with at least upper second class honours in an appropriate subject area or a qualification recognised by the Board of the Graduate Research School as equivalent; or (b) have a bachelor's degree of this University or a qualification recognised by the Board as equivalent, and be able to satisfy the Board that they have had adequate research preparation since graduation; or (c) be a recipient of a University scholarship for PhD study awarded by the Scholarships Committee of the Board; or (d)(i) have previously undertaken work, which in the Board's opinion is of a sufficiently high standard, towards a higher degree by research in this or another approved institution but not have submitted it for any degree; and (ii) have completed and had approved by the Board, on the recommendation of the supervisor and the head of school, a PhD research proposal; or (e)(i) have the degree of bachelor of this University or have a qualification recognised by the Board as equivalent, and have since graduation passed a preliminary examination as described in the University Policy on the Higher Degree by Research Preliminary Course in the subject area in which research is to be undertaken; and (ii) have completed and had approved by the Board, on the recommendation of the supervisor and the head of school, a PhD research proposal. Both the Board of the Graduate Research School and the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences will decide who is eligible.

This course has been developed in response to the international need for advanced training and research in infectious diseases to better prepare medical scientists, medical professionals, the public sector and other groups.

The Master of Exercise Science will expose students to advanced level units within the various sub-disciplines that are informed by the latest research developments and contemporary professional practice. These sub-disciplines studies may include: clinical, sport and occupational biomechanics; exercise physiology; motor learning and control; sport, exercise, health and coaching psychology; physical activity promotion; and sport and recreation marketing and management.

This Master's specialisation is aimed at students wishing to undertake advanced study or research majoring in one of the sub-discipline areas within exercise science. There is a choice of postgraduate units within biomechanics; motor control and development; exercise physiology and biochemistry; health behaviour and performance psychology; and exercise rehabilitation.
